Good Razor Gives A Good Shave

Philips Norelco 8140XL SpeedXL Men's Shaver System

Customer Reviewer and Rating: S. Banks - 5 Stars
This is my third Norelco electric razor purchased since I started shaving over 40 years ago. They have all been very good razors and a good value for your money. They give a very good shave although not as good as a blade, naturally. This 8240xl is pretty quiet and lighter than the others I have owned. It is a basic, no bells and whistles, razor that has the triple blade in each head.

It takes between one to two weeks before the heads get 'seated in' and your face gets accustomed to the razor before it starts to give an optimum shave. I prefer this type of razor over the electric "foil" types, it seems to give a better shave and isn't as rough on your skin. Also, I believe that Norelco has a 45 day trial period so you can return it if you aren't satisfied...can't beat that!

Best Electric Razor I've Used Yet

8140XL SpeedXL Reviews

I switched to using electric razors exclusively about 5 years ago due to the fact I have very sensitive skin and normal razors and shave gel irritate and cause red marks on my skin. My main problem area is the skin under my neck. Over the years I've owned about 5 different electric razors. The first was a 3 blade rotary razor very similar to this one. It was one of the worst razors I've ever used so I switched to using the alternate style electric razor which has a straight razor covered by foil guard and had avoided designs similar to the Norelco 8240xl ever since. I've spent probably $200 on different electric razors over the years and I've never been fully satisfied with them. In fact, I was looking to replace the electric razor I owned now with something new, before I was given an opportunity to review this one. The main problem I have, again, is the hair under my neck is troublesome.

8140XL Speed XL Reviews Product
With my previous electric razor it would never give a clean shave under my neck and I would have to go back to using a straight razor and gel again. With my previous electric razors I never got smooth action when I would shave. It was always quite rough and I always had patches of hair left on my face when I'd already spent several minutes shaving. With the Norelco 8240XL though, I'm extremely impressed with how smooth the action is against the grain of my beard. There's no tugging or anything like that. No rough bumps but incredibly smooth and slick action that I am not used to at all using an electric razor. At first I wasn't all that impressed with how close the shave was but after using it for several days, it now shaves closer than any electric razor I've used before. It's not baby bottom smooth however, but it's smooth enough for me that you can't notice beard growth for 24 hours. I also had a bit of irritation one day after using the razor but I think this was because I was using too much pressure as I applied it to my face.

A Surprising Upgrade - It Really Works!

My husband has been using soap + razors all his life so when his father started recommending an electric razor it was a novel idea. This one is cordless, can be rinsed off after shaving, and gives a very close shave. The one drawback to this (which I suspect would be the same with all electric razors) is that there are certain contours of the face which do not get very well-shaved (the curve of the chin, for example). However, DH usually gets a lot of ingrown hairs from shaving with soap and a razor; he has not gotten any from the electric razor. This may be true of all electric razors, but, he's quite pleased with this one in specific.

My husband looked at me funny when I gave him this new Norelco because I'd just given him one last christmas - thought it was wasteful to use it because the other one wasn't broken or old yet. I convinced him to charge it up and use it and much to his surprise and mine he thanked me over and over for giving it to him saying it really DOES work 50% better and that it made shaving his neck much easier... thanks for a great product update Norelco!
