I bought my first electric shaver about 55 years ago and my first Norelco only a few years later. Since then I've tried them all, and this is by far the best. I joke that it is a magic shaver, because you don't hear anything and don't feel anything. That's a slight exaggeration. You do hear a very slight hum, but it it is so quiet that I really thought something was wrong the first time I used it, but I quickly noticed that where ever it touched my face, the whiskers disappeared.

It does cause some minor skin irritation, but it is instantly cured by a few drops of after shave balm. Very easy to clean, and a charge lasts about two weeks. Very light, very comfortable in your hand. Can't find a single negative.

I haven't used an electric razor in several years. In the past I found that they were convenient for on the go use, but otherwise were inferior to a safety razor. I put this one to the test to see if technology has improved the electric razor. This is the Norelco 8240XL. It doesn't come with a charging dock or LED graph or automatic cleaning system like some of the more expensive models. But for what it lacks in features, I think it makes up for in design. It gives a nice shave and first thing I noticed is how quite it is. It seems to spin at a lower RPM that most other electric razors I have used. I give that feature 5 stars. The second thing that stood out was the overall design of the unit. It appears well made and sturdy. The pivoting heads moves smoothly and the buttons and hinges for the razor head cartridge open and close fluidly.

The razor takes up minimal space. It comes with a small carry pouch that curiously only fits the razor and doesn't make room for the charger. If your traveling for only a few days you probably wouldn't even need the charger as it does seem to hold it's charge for a couple of weeks of daily use easily. It shaves very well which is silky smooth. I only missed 1 hair my first time to use it. I did experience slight facial irritation 10 minutes later after I had shaved. I applied some after shave gel and it stopped. I hadn't used an electric razor in a while and the slight pulling and cutting that occurs did cause the irritation. The shaving head pivots nicely and I was able to shave comfortably around all areas and contours. The shave was close. It was just about as close as a safety razor.

Philips Norelco recommends using this razor for 21 straight days before deciding if it's right for you. It only took one shave to realize my Mach 3 days were over. This "made in Holland" razor is great. While it does not shave quite as closely as the Mach 3 it shaves closely enough that I feel totally comfortable walking out every morning in my suit and tie knowing my face looks clean shaven. My beard is tough, too. On my neck, especially, the whiskers go every which way and are thick. The Norelco chops them all down with no problem. On top of that, my skin is sensitive.

I could count on nicking myself about one in ten times I shaved with the Mach 3. The Norelco does not nick, pinch, burn, or feel uncomfortable in any way. It even handled two days growth without causing any irritation to my skin. The lightness of the razor is a plus. Lightness here does not equate with cheapness as the razor seems solid and durable. It is also very comfortable to hold and emits only a low buzzing sound. It recharges quickly and, so far, at least, holds its charge well. Cleaning under the bathroom faucet is quick, easy, and thorough.
