If you are in the market for a mid level shaver, then the 8240XL is a solid choice.

Just push the button to open the head, rinse it with hot water, shake the water out, and set it aside to dry.

Shaver is substantially quieter and the time spent shaving shorter than most shavers out there. Rinsing the shave heads under running water is a novel feature.

A Very Nice Mid Level Shaver

Philips Norelco SpeedXL 8240XL Men's Shaving System

Customer Reviewer and Rating: Scott Bright - 5 Stars
The Philips Norelco 8240XL is a nice mid level shaver. It gives me a good shave and is a nice solid unit. It comes with a nice protective case that will keep it safe in your travel kit. Had I not moved up to a top of the line shaver before getting this unit, I would have been very happy with it. It will be a big upgrade to my travel kit. It is a lot nicer than the shaver I used just 2 years ago as my main one. It doesn't have the digital battery level indicator or stand that I've gotten to like in my other shavers so I miss those.

My main shaver is the Philips Norelco arcitec 1090 Men's Shaving System which is awesome. It is also twice the price. I also use the Philips Norelco 8040X Moisturizing Shaving System in the shower, or when I want to shave with shaving gel. It gives an incredibly close shave. Overall I am extremely impressed with the Philips Norelco line of shavers. If you are in the market for a mid level shaver, then the 8240XL is a solid choice. If you are ready to spend the money to get a top of the line model then the Arcitec 1090 is a great choice. I love mine. I'm also becoming very fond of the wet dry 8040X system.

Quite A Good Shave

I needed to replace by Braun 7500 razor that I had been using for 5 or 6 years. After looking and all the reviews and shopping around, I decided to try a rotary razor as these were supposed to get the longer hairs and coarse hairs better than the foil types. Buying this razor was a great purchase. It is so much quieter than my old razor. It took a while to get used to the quiet but I no longer wake my wife by shaving. After about a week by skin became used to the new style of shaver. I've cut my shaving time down by half with the Norelco! With the Braun I had to go over areas multiple times to get all the difficult hairs. The Norelco seems to get everything on the first pass or too, even the coarse or longer hairs. Even when I don't shave for two or three days, it still cut close and quick.

I also like rinsing the shaver under the faucet instead of the cleaning station the braun had. I no longer spend $10 every two months buying the cleaning solution and my wife appreciates not having the "spaceship" taking up room on the counter. If you are looking for a good electric razor this is one to buy. Good price, good performance, quiet operations, and easy cleanup.

Better Than Expected

I have had this razor for just over a month now and am quite satisfied. I mostly shave everyday, but sometimes go scruffy for a couple of days, and at this point I have not had to recharge the razor yet. I have a moderately heavy beard, so when I'm shaving after a few days there is a little bit of pull, but not so much different than a straight blade. My previous razor was a Remington, which still works but would need new blades and battery.

So I updated! The Norelco does shave closer than my Remington (age), and the rinse and air dry cleaning is so easy. If you're used to electric razors, then the transition to this razor is nothing. For straight blade users it might take a bit to get used to. I've owned several electric razors, mostly Norelco's, over the years. The design remains the same, but they've made it better somehow. Hard to imagine how their top of the line could be any better than this one. Very happy with it.
